ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Cricket West Indies CWI announced today that Phil Simmons has resigned as the Head Coach of the West Indies cricket team, effective immediately. The decision comes after a period of disappointing performances and mounting pressure on the team. Simmons, who took over the coaching role in 2015, guided the West Indies to victory in the 2016 T20 World Cup but has faced criticism for recent struggles, including a poor showing in the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

In a statement released by CWI, Simmons expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the team and work with talented players. He cited personal reasons and the need for a fresh perspective as key factors in his decision. CWI President Ricky Skerritt acknowledged Simmons’ contributions to West Indies cricket, particularly highlighting the 2016 World Cup win as a significant achievement.

The resignation comes at a crucial time as the West Indies look to rebuild and improve their performances on the international stage. CWI has announced that an interim coach will be appointed while they search for a permanent successor. The board has committed to conducting a thorough search to find a candidate who can lead the team back to its former glory and restore its competitive edge.

Simmons’ departure marks the end of an era and sets the stage for a new chapter in West Indies cricket, with hopes pinned on revitalizing the team and achieving future successes.
