On July 6, 2024, the Penrith Panthers confirmed that Taylan May has officially departed the club, effective immediately. This decision follows a legal and contractual dispute between the NRL player and the team. May, who has been under the NRL’s no-fault stand-down policy since May due to domestic violence charges, has opted to accept a payout from the Panthers rather than pursue legal action against the club.
May’s departure marks a significant shift for both the player and the Panthers. The 22-year-old centre, who has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of stalking related to an April 8 incident involving his wife, had been suspended from play until March 2025, pending the resolution of his legal issues.
Earlier in the year, May had re-signed with Penrith but faced challenges following the issuance of two show-cause notices from the club. These notices not only pertained to his domestic violence charges but also to a prior incident from October 2021, when May was found guilty of assault during the Panthers’ grand-final celebrations, though no conviction was recorded. Additionally, a video surfaced showing May in a speeding car, further complicating his situation.
Following the issuance of the second show-cause notice, related to his domestic violence charges, May sought damages and compensation through the Federal Court, alleging breaches of employment laws by the Panthers. The civil matter between May and the club was resolved on July 5 with the player accepting an undisclosed settlement to terminate his contract.
Penrith’s official statement on the matter read: “Taylan May is departing the Penrith Panthers effective immediately and is seeking other opportunities.” The club expressed support for May’s decision and noted that they are moving forward with new talent. Paul Alamoti has since become a key replacement in the centre position, with additional depth provided by mid-season recruit Asu Kepaoa and promising young players Jesse and Casey McLean.
May’s departure ends his 30-game stint with the Panthers, which began with his NRL debut in 2021. As he moves on from the club, there has already been interest from both domestic and international teams, including opportunities in rugby union.
