In a recent statement, the CEO of the Penrith Panthers has confirmed ongoing discussions with the Wigan Warriors but firmly ruled out the possibility of a World Club Challenge in the near future. This revelation comes as the Panthers continue to solidify their position as one of the premier teams in the NRL, following their recent successes.

The CEO emphasized the importance of international engagement and the potential benefits of aligning with a prestigious club like Wigan. “We’ve had positive conversations with Wigan,” he said, acknowledging the rich history and competitive spirit that both clubs share. However, he made it clear that a formal World Club Challenge is not on the agenda. “While we appreciate the interest and the concept, our focus remains on the NRL and our upcoming season.”

The World Club Challenge has traditionally pitted the champions of the NRL against the winners of the Super League, but in recent years, it has faced criticism for its logistics and the demands it places on players. Many clubs have raised concerns about the timing of the event, particularly as it often clashes with the rigorous NRL season schedule. The CEO noted that ensuring the welfare of players is a top priority. “We have to be realistic about what’s best for our athletes and the competition as a whole,” he explained.

Despite ruling out the World Club Challenge, the Panthers are keen to explore other avenues for international competition. The CEO hinted at potential future collaborations that could benefit both Australian and English rugby league, aiming to enhance the sport’s profile globally. “We’re open to exploring different formats and competitions that allow us to engage with international clubs in a meaningful way,” he stated.

As the Panthers prepare for another NRL season, their focus remains on domestic success, but the dialogue with Wigan reflects their ambition to maintain a connection with the global rugby league community. With the club’s strong foundation, the Panthers are poised to continue their rise in the league while considering the future of international play.
