NEWS UP-DATE: Drake’s legal action over Kendrick Lamar track as he ……
As in his previous filing, Drake goes on to accuse Universal of using “bots” to falsely inflate Lamar’s streaming numbers, and of paying influencers to promote Not Like Us online
Drake has taken legal action against Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify, alleging they engaged in unethical practices to artificially boost Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, “Not Like Us”, which targets Drake directly. His lawsuit, filed by his company Frozen Moments LLC, accuses UMG of employing bots to inflate streaming numbers, covertly paying radio stations for excessive airplay (a practice banned under FCC regulations), and using influencers to promote the song aggressively on social media. Furthermore, Drake claims UMG allowed the song to spread freely by waiving copyright restrictions, amplifying its reach.
Drake’s defamation concerns arise from the song’s lyrics, which allegedly include damaging and false accusations against him. He asserts that UMG knowingly distributed the track despite its defamatory content, further intensifying his legal case. Additionally, Drake seeks transparency regarding UMG’s promotional tactics, aiming to expose and reform industry practices like payola and bot-driven streaming.
The rapper’s legal actions spotlight issues of fairness in music promotion, raising broader questions about industry ethics in the digital era. While UMG has denied the allegations, labeling them as “offensive and untrue,” this case could have significant implications for the music industry if proven true, including increased scrutiny over promotional strategies and calls for stricter regulation
