BREAKING NEWS: Suriname’s protest note to Guyana over ……
Suriname has officially lodged a protest with Guyana over activities in the disputed Tigri Area, also known as the New River Triangle. This region, a longstanding source of tension between the two nations, is claimed by both but effectively controlled by Guyana. Suriname’s Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin raised objections to Guyana’s plans to build an airstrip and a school in the area, which Suriname views as a violation of a 1970 agreement between the two nations. These developments have further strained bilateral relations.
The protest takes place against a backdrop of regional diplomatic challenges. Suriname has emphasized peaceful resolution mechanisms, including border commission negotiations, to address the issue. However, it has ruled out taking the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), citing prior reservations about the ICJ’s jurisdiction.
The dispute over the Tigri Area complicates broader regional dynamics. Both countries are members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which prioritizes maintaining regional stability. Notably, while managing its dispute with Guyana, Suriname has expressed support for Guyana’s sovereignty in a separate border conflict with Venezuela, further underlining the complexities of these overlapping territorial claims.
This situation highlights the need for sustained diplomatic engagement to resolve such disputes amicably, given the historical tensions and potential security implications in South America.
