Alabama WR Malik Benson to re-enter transfer portal after year at Florida State

Malik Benson, a wide receiver who began his collegiate career at Hutchinson Community College, has announced his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal once again. This decision comes after a season with the Florida State Seminoles, where he recorded 25 receptions for 311 yards and one touchdown during the 2024 campaign.

Benson’s journey has been marked by notable transitions. At Hutchinson Community College, he set a school record with 2,152 career receiving yards and scored 22 touchdowns over two seasons. His exceptional performance earned him the distinction of being the top junior college recruit in 2023, leading to his transfer to the University of Alabama. During his time with the Crimson Tide in 2023, Benson participated in 14 games, amassing 12 receptions for 162 yards and a touchdown.

Following his stint at Alabama, Benson transferred to Florida State University (FSU) for the 2024 season. His decision to re-enter the transfer portal is influenced by a recent NCAA ruling that grants junior college (JUCO) players an additional year of eligibility. This change stems from a legal case involving Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, who successfully argued that his JUCO playing seasons should not count toward his NCAA eligibility. As a result, the NCAA now allows JUCO players to retain all four years of eligibility upon transferring to NCAA institutions.

Benson’s decision to utilize this extra year of eligibility presents him with an opportunity to further develop his skills and make a significant impact at another program. His experience across multiple teams and his proven track record at the junior college level make him a valuable asset for programs seeking to bolster their receiving corps.

As the transfer portal continues to reshape college football rosters, Benson’s movement will be closely watched by teams aiming to enhance their offensive capabilities. His next destination remains to be seen, but his journey underscores the evolving landscape of college athletics and the opportunities presented by recent eligibility reforms.
