Borussia Dortmund is actively pursuing Chelsea defender Renato Veiga, aiming to secure him on an initial loan deal. Chelsea, however, prefers a permanent transfer or a loan with an obligation to buy, valuing the 21-year-old Portuguese international between £20 million and £24 million.
Veiga, who joined Chelsea from FC Basel in July 2024 for £12 million, has made 18 appearances this season, predominantly in cup competitions, with only one Premier League start. Primarily utilized as a left-back under manager Enzo Maresca, Veiga favors a central defensive role, a position Dortmund is offering.
Despite Dortmund reportedly agreeing on personal terms with Veiga, negotiations between the clubs have yet to yield an agreement. Dortmund’s preference for a loan deal contrasts with Chelsea’s inclination for a permanent transfer or a loan with an obligation to buy. Chelsea has already rejected a loan approach from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.
Manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his trust in Veiga, highlighting the player’s development at Chelsea, which led to his debut with the Portugal national team in 2024. Maresca emphasized the importance of versatility, stating that players must adapt to different positions for the benefit of the team.
As discussions continue, it remains uncertain whether an agreement satisfying both clubs and the player will be reached before the January transfer window closes.
