The conferment ceremony took place at the historic Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, as part of Barbados’ independence celebrations. The event was attended by dignitaries from around the world, underscoring the significance of the occasion. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados lauded Prime Minister Modi’s strategic leadership and his prompt actions to assist Barbados during one of its most challenging periods. She emphasized that such gestures of solidarity have strengthened the bonds between the two nations.

The Honorary Freedom of Barbados award, established in 2019 through the Order of Freedom of Barbados Act, is reserved for individuals who have rendered distinguished service to Barbados or its citizens. Notably, this honor is not limited to Barbadian nationals; it has been previously awarded to international figures such as King Charles III, former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Guyanese President Dr. Irfaan Ali.

India and Barbados have historically shared close and cordial relations, actively collaborating in international forums such as the United Nations, the Commonwealth, and the Non-Aligned Movement. Approximately 3,000 individuals of Indian origin reside in Barbados, many of whom have integrated seamlessly into the local community, further cementing the cultural and social ties between the two countries.
