Guyana Poised for Military Action as Venezuela Moves to Annex Oil-Rich Essequibo Region

Guyana Poised for Military Action as Venezuela Moves to Annex…..The longstanding territorial dispute between Guyana and Venezuela over the oil-rich Essequibo region has intensified, leading to heightened tensions and military posturing. Recent developments have seen both nations taking assertive actions, escalating concerns over regional stability.

Venezuela’s Annexation Efforts

On December 3, 2023, Venezuela conducted a referendum wherein voters overwhelmingly supported the annexation of the Essequibo region, a 61,600-square-mile area administered by Guyana but claimed by Venezuela. According to Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, over 95% of participants endorsed the government’s sovereignty claim over the disputed territory.

Following the referendum, Venezuela’s parliament approved legislation to establish a federal state within the Essequibo region, further solidifying its annexation intentions. Additionally, President Nicolás Maduro announced plans to conduct elections in the area, aiming to integrate it into Venezuela’s political framework.

Guyana’s Response and International Involvement

In reaction to Venezuela’s actions, Guyana has sought legal recourse through the International Court of Justice (ICJ), requesting measures to prevent Venezuela from proceeding with its electoral plans in the disputed region. Guyana’s government asserts that such moves violate international law and threaten its sovereignty

The situation has drawn international attention, with the United States announcing joint military flight drills with Guyana as a demonstration of support. The Organization of American States has also condemned Venezuela’s actions, calling for adherence to peaceful and legal resolutions.

Military Incidents and Escalations

Tensions have further escalated due to reported military incidents. In early March 2025, a Venezuelan coast guard vessel entered Guyanese waters near an ExxonMobil-operated oil facility, prompting Guyana to initiate a military response and lodge diplomatic protests. Additionally, an attack along the Cuyuni River resulted in injuries to six Guyanese soldiers, an incident attributed to armed groups from Venezuela.

Historical Context and Legal Dispute

The contention over the Essequibo region dates back to the 19th century, with the current border established by the 1899 Paris Arbitral Award. Venezuela has consistently disputed this ruling, leading to periodic flare-ups in tensions. In 2018, the matter was referred to the ICJ, where proceedings are ongoing.

Conclusion

The recent developments underscore the volatility of the Guyana-Venezuela border dispute. While diplomatic and legal avenues are being pursued, the potential for military confrontation remains a significant concern. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, advocating for peaceful resolution and respect for international law.
