The Government of Guyana initiated a transformative national healthcare program in collaboration with the Mount Sinai Health System and Hess Corporation, aiming to elevate the nation’s healthcare infrastructure and services. This partnership focuses on developing high-quality primary care, specialized services in cardiology and oncology, and significant enhancements at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Key Developments and Achievements:
-
Establishment of a State-of-the-Art Pathology Laboratory: In February 2024, the Guyana Ministry of Health, Mount Sinai Health System, and Hess Corporation unveiled a modern pathology laboratory at GPHC. This facility is equipped with advanced technology to support remote, digital readings of pathology samples, promoting early disease diagnosis and improved patient care.
-
Child Health Screenings: By late 2023, the initiative had facilitated health screenings for approximately half of Guyana’s eligible children, addressing critical health issues and ensuring timely medical interventions.
-
Training of Healthcare Professionals: Over 400 clinicians have been trained under the National Primary Care System Strengthening Initiative to implement new national diabetes screening and treatment guidelines. Additionally, a new nurse assistant curriculum and training program were launched to enhance the skills of nursing assistants, with nearly 900 graduates expected in 2025.
-
Modernization of Health Facilities: Significant improvements have been made at GPHC, including advanced training for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses and the establishment of quality and safety programs to reduce infections and prevent adverse events.
Extension and Future Plans:
In March 2025, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced a five-year extension of the national healthcare initiative. This next phase includes the establishment of a national cancer center, continued modernization of health facilities, and the implementation of an advanced digital health system. The collaboration aims to ensure world-class healthcare services are accessible to every Guyanese citizen.
Furthermore, Hess Corporation has committed to financing the partnership for an additional three years, reinforcing its dedication to the initiative’s success. Mount Sinai will also assist in developing a modern oncology center, expected to become operational by 2027, focusing on both diagnostics and treatment.
Leadership Perspectives:
President Ali emphasized the government’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare, highlighting the holistic approach required, encompassing human resources, systemic and institutional development, infrastructure, technology, and cultural shifts. John Hess, CEO of Hess Corporation, underscored the importance of affordable and high-quality healthcare in achieving long-term, shared prosperity for Guyana’s citizens. Dr. Jeremy Boal, Chief Clinical Officer of Mount Sinai Health System, expressed the institution’s honor in collaborating with Guyana to advance healthcare services.
This strategic partnership marks a significant milestone in Guyana’s journey toward a modernized, efficient, and accessible healthcare system, demonstrating a shared commitment to enhancing the well-being of its population.
