Venezuelan coast guard vessel entered Guyanese waters, approaching an offshore oil facility. This incursion prompted Guyana to initiate a military response and lodge formal
diplomatic protests, emphasizing the severity of the violation and reaffirming its commitment to defending its territorial integrity.
The international community has reacted swiftly to these developments. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a stern warning to Venezuela, stating that any attack on Guyana or
its assets, such as those of ExxonMobil operating in the disputed waters, would result in severe consequences. This warning
underscores the strategic importance of the region, especially given the significant oil reserves that have been discovered offshore.
Regional organizations have also expressed deep concern. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) called for de-escalation and urged both nations to resolve their disputes through peaceful dialogue and adherence to
international law. CARICOM’s appeal highlights the potential for regional instability if tensions are not managed carefully.

resort to force to settle the dispute. They committed to resolving their differences in accordance with international law and established mechanisms to prevent incidents from escalating. However, both nations
maintain differing views on the legitimacy of the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) jurisdiction over the matter, with Venezuela rejecting the ICJ’s authority.
The ICJ’s involvement adds a legal dimension to the dispute, with Guyana seeking to prevent Venezuela from taking unilateral actions in the contested region. Guyana’s appeal to the ICJ
underscores its commitment to resolving the issue through legal channels, despite Venezuela’s objections.
As of April 2025, the situation remains precarious. The discovery of substantial oil reserves in the Essequibo region has heightened the stakes, attracting international interest and complicating the dispute further. The potential
