That is why some were concerned about the program’s future once he left to join the Arkansas Razorbacks, fearing it would lose its mystique and recruiting pedigree. However, despite the difficulties of transition years, Mark Pope performed admirably in his first year in leadership. That’s why Calipari’s top recruit, former NBA player John Wall, had to present him with roses.

“I am thrilled for Mark Pope. I met him this summer, or last summer, in Indiana during an EYBL competition. I talked to him for a brief while. He started out to a fast start, but I believe a lot of injuries slowed their team down. But for your first year, going that far is fantastic. Wall told Matt Jones of KSR that they have a lot of strong components coming in this year, as well as some good elements returning.

Of course, Pope will have some big shoes to fill, and it will be easier said than done, but he knew that when he took the job, so that shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Even so, while the team didn’t go the distance this season, he did a great job with the hand he was given, and there are reasons to have some faith about this program in the future.
