Should the Houston Rockets keep or trade Dillon Brooks this offseason?
Dillon Brooks made a significant impact on the Houston Rockets’ season, but he may have to be sacrificed if a megadeal is in the works.
NBA teams have a habit of thinking too quickly and making important decisions as they get into their stride. Despite early success in a rebuild, teams like the Brooklyn Nets, Phoenix Suns, and Los Angeles Clippers have sold young players and assets in exchange for win-now talent. The Houston Rockets are at a crossroads this offseason, having finished 52-30 last season and making the playoffs for the first time since 2020. The Rockets rebuilt their roster in the proper manner, allocating draft picks and developing talent while supplementing with the right veterans.
Dillon Brooks was one of the veterans who had a significant impact on Houston. The 29-year-old’s future looked dismal two years ago, when the Memphis Grizzlies announced he would not return to the franchise. The Rockets swooped in for the ‘villain’, and it paid off: he averaged 14.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.
However, no Rockets player is safe this summer, given the rumours of blockbuster trades involving Houston and other players.
The 6-foot-6 forward will get $21.1 million next season, making him not only a salary filler but also another veteran to help a developing squad. If an upgrade at the forward position is in the works, Brooks should be one of the players Houston considers keeping. His fit inside the organisation allows him to play alongside any player, including one in the same position.
Brooks’ spot-up shooting talents would make him a wonderful veteran alongside Antetokounmpo or Durant. While Jalen Green and Fred VanVleet are more valuable, Houston should start thinking about team fit if it decides to pursue a superstar.
