UP-DATE: Ian Watson lands new coaching job in rugby union
Former Huddersfield Giants head coach Ian Watson has taken on a surprising new role in rugby union, joining the Seattle Seawolves as an assistant coach. Watson, who has a rich history in rugby league, including leading Salford Red Devils to the 2019 Super League Grand Final and the 2020 Challenge Cup Final, transitions to rugby union following his dismissal from Huddersfield earlier this year.
In his new role, Watson will oversee the Seawolves’ backs and team defense. The Seawolves, part of Major League Rugby in the United States, finished second in their conference in 2024 and narrowly missed out on the championship title. Watson expressed enthusiasm about the new challenge, describing the move as an “opportunity and experience [he] couldn’t miss.” He joins an ambitious organization under the leadership of head coach Allen Clarke, a former Ireland international.
This marks Watson’s first role in rugby union, showcasing his willingness to expand his coaching portfolio and embrace new challenges.
