LSU’s men’s basketball team secured a strong early-season win against Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) with an 80-71 victory. Led by standout performances from Daimion Collins and Corey Chest, the Tigers showcased their offensive depth and resilience on defense in a tightly contested game at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Collins, a 6’9” forward, dominated the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. His athleticism and ability to score both inside and outside proved crucial in breaking FGCU’s defensive schemes. From alley-oops to contested jump shots, Collins demonstrated why he’s considered a key piece for LSU this season. His presence in the paint not only deterred FGCU from easy scoring opportunities but also helped LSU control the rebounding battle, edging FGCU 38-32 on the boards.

Freshman Corey Chest added another layer to LSU’s success, contributing 16 points and eight rebounds. Chest’s energy off the bench was pivotal during critical stretches of the game. He showed maturity beyond his years, attacking FGCU’s defense with confidence and drawing fouls to earn trips to the free-throw line. His highlight reel included a thunderous dunk midway through the second half that electrified the crowd and gave LSU momentum when FGCU attempted a late-game comeback.

The Eagles, led by guard Isaiah Thompson’s 19 points, proved a formidable opponent. Thompson hit several key three-pointers to keep FGCU within striking distance. Zach Anderson also chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds, providing the Eagles with a strong inside-outside game. Despite their efforts, FGCU struggled to overcome LSU’s balanced offensive attack and the Tigers’ ability to generate turnovers.

LSU’s veteran guard Adam Miller orchestrated the offense efficiently, tallying 12 points and six assists. Miller’s leadership on the court helped LSU maintain composure during FGCU’s runs, especially late in the second half when the Eagles narrowed the Tigers’ lead to just five points. A crucial three-pointer from Miller with under four minutes left helped seal the win.

Defensively, LSU employed a mix of zone and man-to-man coverage to disrupt FGCU’s rhythm. The Tigers forced 14 turnovers, converting them into 18 points on the other end. This defensive intensity was complemented by an impressive 52% shooting performance from the field, including 40% from beyond the arc.

The victory improves LSU to 2-0 on the season, providing momentum as they prepare for tougher competition in the weeks ahead. Coach Matt McMahon praised the team’s effort, highlighting Collins and Chest as the catalysts for the win. “They stepped up big for us tonight.
