Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 250 pounds, Payton has been a significant contributor to FSU’s defense over the past three seasons. His collegiate career includes 109 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 16 sacks, 12 pass breakups, and three forced fumbles. In 2022, he was honored as the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year, reflecting his immediate impact on the field.
In the 2023 season, Payton started all 14 games for the Seminoles, recording 44 tackles, including 14.5 for loss with 7.0 sacks, 10 pass breakups, seven quarterback hurries, and two forced fumbles. His pass breakup total was the highest by an ACC defensive lineman since 2016, and he led the team in tackles for loss.
Payton’s decision to transfer comes after a challenging 2024 season for FSU, which finished with a 2-10 record, leading to numerous coaching changes and significant roster turnover.
