Aston Villa has officially signed Dutch forward Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund for a reported fee of €23 million (£19 million), with an additional €3 million (£2.5 million) in potential add-ons.
Malen, 25, began his career in the youth academies of Ajax and Arsenal before making a significant impact at PSV Eindhoven. In 2021, he transferred to Borussia Dortmund, where he scored 39 goals in 132 appearances. This season, he has netted five goals across all competitions, including one in Dortmund’s recent 3-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg.
Upon joining Aston Villa, Malen expressed his enthusiasm for returning to England and competing in the Premier League. He stated, “It’s a dream come true for sure. I’ve been in the Arsenal Academy, and it was always a dream to play here. It’s finally happening, so I’m very happy.”
Malen also highlighted the role of his former Dortmund teammate, Ian Maatsen, in influencing his decision to join Villa. He mentioned, “He texted me a few times and said very good things about the club. I’m very happy to see him again.”
Aston Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, expressed confidence in Malen’s ability to enhance the team’s attacking options. Emery noted, “Of course, it’s a change. A clear change. One player leaving, one player joining us.”
Malen’s arrival coincides with the anticipated departure of forward Jaden Philogene to Ipswich Town. Villa is currently eighth in the Premier League, with 32 points, and is preparing for an upcoming match against Everton.
Malen’s versatility and experience are expected to be valuable assets as Aston Villa aims to strengthen its position in the league and make a significant impact in domestic and European competitions.
