As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare to face the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round on Saturday, Head Coach Andy Reid emphasizes the importance of a strong start and consistent execution throughout the game. Reflecting on their previous playoff encounter with the Texans in 2020, where the Chiefs overcame a 24-0 deficit to win 51-31, Reid remarked, “We didn’t start off very well, that’s for sure.”
Reid’s focus is on ensuring his team maintains resilience and composure, especially against a formidable Texans defense that recently forced four interceptions in their wild-card victory over the Chargers. He acknowledges the Texans’ speed and coaching, stating, “They’ve got a ton of speed on that football team, and they’re well-coached and execute well.”
The Chiefs, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has a 15-3 playoff record and is 6-0 in divisional-round games, aim to leverage their postseason experience. Mahomes highlights the team’s focus on daily improvement, saying, “We have to just really focus on the day and how we can get better, and try to win the game.”
Reid’s strategic approach includes addressing the offensive line’s performance, particularly at the left tackle position, to protect Mahomes from the Texans’ pass rushers, Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter, who combined for 24.5 sacks in the regular season. The potential return of cornerback Jaylen Watson, who has been sidelined since October, could bolster the Chiefs’ defense.
As Reid approaches his 300th career win, a milestone achieved by only three other coaches, he remains focused on the immediate task: executing a well-rounded game plan to secure a victory against the Texans and advance toward a potential third consecutive Super Bowl appearance.
