Breaking News: Guyana triggers military response after Venezuelan vessel enters its waters
Guyana has initiated a military response and diplomatic actions following the incursion of a Venezuelan coast guard vessel into its territorial waters. The Venezuelan ship entered Guyanese waters and approached an offshore oil facility operated by ExxonMobil, violating international maritime agreements.
President Irfaan Ali emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that Guyana’s maritime boundaries are internationally recognized. The government summoned the Venezuelan ambassador and issued a formal protest. Military measures, including deploying air and coast guard assets, have been implemented to safeguard national sovereignty.
The United States and the Organization of American States (OAS) have condemned Venezuela’s actions, expressing support for Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
This incident is part of a longstanding territorial dispute between Guyana and Venezuela over the mineral-rich Essequibo region, which Venezuela claims has been wrongfully administered by Guyana. The conflict remains unresolved despite previous diplomatic efforts and is currently under deliberation at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Tensions have escalated recently, with reports of attacks on Guyanese soldiers near the Venezuela border. Six soldiers were injured when armed individuals from Venezuela opened fire, further straining relations between the two countries.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging both nations to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to prevent further escalation.
