Rookie tight end Sam LaPorta injured his knee in the second quarter of the Detroit Lions’ final regular-season game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Laporta initially fled on his own before going under a blue tent.
But after a few minutes, Laporta was taken to the locker room.
It is officially doubtful whether he will return.
Update: Laporta has been demoted to out for the remainder of the game.
Laporta had a great season for the Lions.
Entering Week 18, the rookie tight end had 81 catches for 860 yards and nine touchdowns.
On Sunday, LaPorta added five more catches for 29 yards and a touchdown.
In the first quarter of the game, he set a Lions franchise record for most receptions in a season by a tight end.
Hopefully this injury isn’t as bad as it seems, but it’s sure to spark some debate as to whether the Lions made the right decision to start against the Vikings.
Detroit still has a slim chance of reaching the NFC’s two seeds with wins and losses against the Cowboys and Eagles.
However, whether or not Detroit won that game, third place was a much more likely outcome.
In response to questions earlier in the week, coach Dan Campbell insisted he would play as a starter while the two seeded teams were still playing.
If LaPorta misses next week’s playoffs, the Lions will be severely shortchanged at the position, as TE2 Brock Wright has missed the past three games with an injury.
This story is a work in progress.
Update: Coach Dan Campbell gave the following update on Laporta: “All I can say is it’s not as bad as it looks, but it’s not a good message.
” Update 2 : Ian says Rapoport expects Laporta to be “out for a while” Update 3: ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the same injury, but takes a more positive view: Next NFL Jaguars collapse was systemic Bob Myers’ position with NFL Washington Commanders, explained Jim Harbaugh NFL coaching rumors, explained with updates and interesting history Patriots, great uncertainty and Entering offseason with huge resources A.J.
