The Texas Longhorns needed to strengthen their linebacker room through the NCAA transfer portal, and Kendrick Blackshear, a transfer from the Alabama Crimson Tide, did just that when he announced his transfer to the Longhorns on Tuesday.

The Longhorns soon announced his official addition to the program.
“I was able to return home to the coaching staff, to Sark, and to the greatest state of Texas,” Blackshear told On3 of his decision.
“It means a lot to me.
Plus, I’m with a group of people who want to see me succeed and succeed,” said Blackshear, who has one year of eligibility left.

As a recruit, Blackshear ranks No.
168 overall among players and No.
21 among linebackers in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and is currently with the Alabama Crimson Tide early in the COVID-19 recruiting season.
He committed to Texas assistant Jeff Banks.
The Longhorns also offered Blackshear, among about 30 other programs.

A well-developed linebacker and avid hitter, Blackshear is known for his ability in the run game, an area where Texas will likely need additional help next year.
His passing skills still need further development, so new linebackers coach Johnny Nansen will conduct some physical tests.
The Longhorns already have good news in the linebacker room after David Gbenda announced he would be back for another season, making the position room even stronger.
