LEVERKUSEN STRIKE €20M DEAL FOR ANDRÉ ONANA – CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOOTBALL AND TEN HAG REUNION SEAL THE MOVE

Bayer 04 Leverkusen have set the Bundesliga transfer market alight by agreeing a €20 million deal for Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana, with Fabrizio Romano reporting the move is “expected to be completed soon.”

According to multiple reports, personal terms are already agreed. The 29-year-old Cameroonian was convinced after a direct phone call from new Leverkusen coach Erik ten Hag, the man who shaped his rise to prominence at Ajax.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AS A DECIDING FACTOR

For Onana, the pull of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League was irresistible. Leverkusen, fresh off their Bundesliga triumph, will be playing under Europe’s brightest lights next season.

Manchester United, by contrast, finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for any European competition. The chance to swap a season without continental football for another shot at the Champions League proved a major tipping point in Onana’s decision.

HRADECKY HEADING TO MONACO

This move comes as Lukas Hradecky prepares to leave Leverkusen after seven years. According to Kicker, the club has agreed a €3 million fee with AS Monaco, potentially rising to €4 million with bonuses.

The Finnish international has been given permission to travel to Monaco for a medical. If all goes well, he will sign a contract until 2027 with an option to extend. Hradecky’s departure was inevitable after the arrival of Mark Flekken from Brentford FC, who was set to take over the starting role.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes told Sky:

“We’re trying to find a good solution for Lukas. He’s a valued player and now has the perspective of playing in the Champions League again.”

ONANA-TEN HAG REUNION

Erik ten Hag’s arrival at Leverkusen in July 2025 has already started to reshape the squad. The Dutchman knows Onana’s strengths inside out—his lightning reflexes, composure under pressure, and exceptional ball distribution make him the perfect fit for ten Hag’s structured, possession-heavy style.

A successful transfer would not only reunite player and coach but also send a strong message that Leverkusen intend to defend their Bundesliga crown and push deep in Europe this season.
