MLS All-Stars celebrate 3-1 win over Liga MX in 2025 without Messi

MLS OUTSHINES LIGA MX IN ALL-STAR SHOWDOWN – WITHOUT MESSI

Austin, Texas – July 2025 – The Major League Soccer All-Stars made a clear statement on Wednesday night, defeating the Liga MX All-Stars 3–1 in the 29th edition of the MLS All-Star Game, held at Q2 Stadium in Austin.

This marks the third time MLS has emerged victorious in four meetings between the two North American leagues — and they did it without the presence of their most high-profile stars, Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, both of whom withdrew hours before kickoff.

Surridge, Baribo, White Deliver for MLS

The MLS All-Star goals came courtesy of three of the league’s in-form forwards: Sam Surridge (Nashville SC), Tai Baribo (Philadelphia Union), and Brian White (Vancouver Whitecaps) — all of whom have topped the Golden Boot standings at various points this season. Their performance on the night was clinical and deserved, each forward making the most of their opportunity on the big stage.

Stuver Shines at Home

Another standout was Brad Stuver, the starting goalkeeper for MLS and a local hero at Austin FC. Playing in front of a home crowd, Stuver — who didn’t break into MLS until his early 30s — delivered a composed and confident display. Since joining Austin in their inaugural 2021 season, he has become one of the club’s most respected and beloved figures.

A New Star Emerges for Liga MX

Despite the defeat, Liga MX had a moment of brilliance in the form of 16-year-old Gilberto Mora of Club Tijuana. Mora, who already caught the eye with Mexico’s national team during the Concacaf Gold Cup, announced himself on the international stage with a powerful second-half goal. That strike made him the youngest goal scorer in MLS All-Star Game history, and arguably the most exciting talent of the evening.

Messi and Alba Withdraw Amid Controversy

Notably absent from the spectacle were Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, both of whom were named to the All-Star squad but opted out just hours before kickoff. Their decision has ignited controversy within MLS, especially given league rules that require a one-match suspension for any healthy player who skips the All-Star Game.

If enforced, the rule would see both Messi and Alba miss Inter Miami’s crucial clash with FC Cincinnati — a top-of-the-table Eastern Conference fixture scheduled for Saturday.

The Bigger Picture

With or without Messi, MLS used this All-Star night to prove something bigger — that the league is deeper than its global icons. While two of its biggest names chose not to show up, those on the field demonstrated that MLS is more than just star power — it’s substance, talent, and a growing football culture.

The league resumes action on Friday, with all eyes on how it handles the fallout from Messi and Alba’s absence. For more updates, visit our MLS News Section.
